SRT vs VTT vs Transcript vs Audio Files
Understand what SRT, VTT, transcript, and audio files contain, where each format is used, and which files to keep after video translation.
A translated video project can produce several files that look related but serve different jobs.

What is an SRT file?
SRT stands for SubRip Subtitle. It is a plain-text subtitle format.
A cue contains:
- A sequence number
- A start and end time
- The subtitle text

SRT is widely accepted and easy to edit in a plain-text editor. Basic SRT files do not carry much styling information.
YouTube recommends SRT or SubViewer for creators who are new to subtitle files. Its supported subtitle format guide says basic SRT files should use plain UTF-8 text.
What is a VTT file?
VTT usually refers to WebVTT, the Web Video Text Tracks format. It is designed for timed text connected with web audio and video.
A simple file begins with WEBVTT:

WebVTT can support captions, subtitles, descriptions, chapters, and other time-aligned metadata. The W3C WebVTT specification defines the format.
Use VTT when a web player or publishing system requests it.
SRT vs VTT
Choose SRT when:
- The platform accepts SRT.
- You need a simple editable subtitle file.
- Your editor or translation workflow uses SRT.
- Styling and positioning are not important.
Choose VTT when:
- A web player expects VTT.
- You need WebVTT cue settings.
- The file will be used with an HTML video track.
- The publishing system specifically requests VTT.
Do not rename .srt to .vtt. The time format and file structure differ.
What is a transcript?
A transcript is the written record of what is said. It usually does not include the precise start and end time for every line.
Use a transcript for:
- Translation review
- Searchable notes
- Article drafts
- Meeting records
- Course handouts
- Terminology review
- Creating subtitles later
A transcript may include speaker labels and paragraph breaks. It should not be treated as a ready subtitle file unless timings are added and line breaks are reviewed.
What is an audio file?
An audio file contains the translated speech track. It may also contain music and effects, depending on the export.
Common formats include:
- WAV
- MP3
- AAC
- FLAC
Use the format required by the video editor or platform. WAV is often useful for editing because it can store uncompressed audio. MP3 is smaller but uses lossy compression.
For YouTube multi-language audio, use a supported audio-only file that is roughly the same length as the video. Check YouTube's current multi-language instructions before upload.
Technical checks before upload
Small format errors can cause a platform to reject a file or display the wrong timing.
- Save subtitle text as UTF-8 so accented characters and non-Latin scripts remain intact.
- Use commas for SRT milliseconds, such as
00:00:04,200. - Use periods for WebVTT milliseconds, such as
00:00:04.200. - Begin a VTT file with
WEBVTT. - Keep cue numbers in order in an SRT file.
- Check that every cue ends after it starts and that cues do not overlap by mistake.
- Open the uploaded track and inspect the first, middle, and final cues.
Renaming the extension does not convert the format. Export or convert the file, then check its header and time codes before upload.

Include the language, version, and file purpose in every name.
Common mistakes
Uploading a transcript as subtitles
A transcript without timings will not behave like a subtitle track.
Editing the subtitles but not the audio
If the correction changes the spoken meaning, update both files.
Using subtitles from an old translation draft
Generate or review subtitles against the final dubbed audio.
Losing the clean audio
Keep the separate audio track even when the final video is already exported.
Mixing regional versions
Label language and region clearly, such as pt-BR and pt-PT, when the versions differ.
